Delegating is the Key
I’ve been told countless times, “ I don’t know how you do it.”
I’m married with 3 kids, own my own company, have a side business, am involved in a number of boards and organizations and it seems like I am always adding something else to my plate. Before you start thinking I’m some sort of Superhero who probably runs on 3-4 hours of sleep a night, let me dispel this myth.
The only way I can do half of the things I am involved in, is because I’ve learned to delegate.
Delegating is a skill that needs to be practiced and perfected. I can remember a time, not so long ago, when the thought of delegating seemed like an impossible task.
I can’t delegate anything. I have to do everything myself!!!
Everytime I delegate something, they do it wrong and I end up having to do it myself anyway!
Nobody does it like I do it.
Sound familiar? I wanted to control everything. And then I victimized myself about it. It took me years to let go and start delegating but I am so glad I finally did.
Life is about priorities. There are some things worth spending your time on, and some things not worth spending your time on.
I have always been a perfectionist. I thought I had to do everything myself in order to get it done the way I wanted it. Buying presents? No one would pick a meaningful gift like I would. Going grocery shopping? I like to pick out my own fruit. Organizing? No one’s system worked like mine. And on and on it went. I had a million great excuses for not delegating. But honestly, they were all BS!
Today, I am in a much more evolved place. I can delegate almost everything! I think it’s been over 2 years since I last went to Costco! I kind of miss it!
I choose to spend my time on things that really matter. Quality time with my kids, parent/teacher conferences, dinner or lunch with friends, date night with my husband, calling my parents, traveling, producing good work that adds value to the world.
Sure, no one will pick fruit using my exact same criteria (although you can teach that) but does it really matter? I became much happier and freer once I decided to let some things go and stopped trying to control everything.
Think about it.
