Tick, Tock, goes the Clock
The thing is… you think you have time.
I remember reading that quote once. It really resonated.
Time is something we take for granted. We always think we’ll have more time. So we waste it…being angry, procrastinating, lying around doing nothing. Our energy is spent and we say to ourselves, “I’ll just do it tomorrow.”
But what if tomorrow never comes? Or what if tomorrow, fate has other plans for you? Why does a tragedy need to happen in order to learn these hard lessons? Or why do we easily forget them?
My dad is spending thanksgiving day in the hospital. He’s always believed he’s going to live to be 117. He’s said it so many times, I actually thought he might. At least until he was in his 90’s. Not sooner. He has great genes. My grandmother, his mother, lived to be 102.
He was admitted on Nov. 16th for pneumonia after not responding to two rounds of antibiotics. It’s been almost a week and he’s still there. His lungs have cleared of the pneumonia but his pet scans have revealed a number of nodules all over his body, in his lungs, and next to his liver. The Dr.’s have yet to give a diagnosis.
So here we are, hoping for the best, bracing ourselves for the worst and praying for divine intervention. My father, a stubborn man, is frustrated and humbled, a sight difficult for me to see. I don’t know what fate has in store but I sure hope it’s at least 16 more years. (the 90 mark)
So this Thanksgiving day, let’s learn our lesson and be grateful. Really grateful. For TIME. For HEALTH. For LAUGHTER. For LOVE. For LIFE.
Because life is a gift. A gift with an expiration date. And they never put that expiration date on the label.
